Basic Intro and Operation: Start by introducing how the robot is programmed and following a basic test program. (example: move forward 3 spaces, left 2 turns, forward 2 spaces,) Students can measure the distance traveled per click of a forward command. Students can measure the degree of turn of 1 turn command. Have students think in terms of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math). They can discover the relation between the programming and the output which is the distance/direction traveled. (math) How many pushes for a 360 or 180-degree circle?Mazes and Puzzles: Use challenge cards which has various puzzles or mazes for the robot to navigate. Use physical objects which can be used as objectives or barriers. (cones, foam cubes, etc) Students will need to figure out a program for getting out of the maze and write it down in their “program book.” They will then execute the program and see how successful they were. They will make modifications and try again until successful.Magnet Pick-up Game: Attach a magnet that can be stuck to the underside of the robot. Students can play a game where their goal is to move around the playing field (gameboard) and pick up the various objectives. (objectives are made of metal and will stick to the robot when it rolls over. Such as a paper clip) Students can play a game where their goal is to avoid metallic items and make it to their objective.Drawing Robot: Attach a marker to the front of the robot using tape. Students will place the robot with pen attached on a white piece of paper and try to draw their name. Students can measure the line drawn during a game and try to find ways to optimize or shorten the travel distance.Bulldozer/ Soccer Robot: Attach a paper or cardboard bumper to the front of the robot which can be used to guide a ball or push around light obstacles. Students can program ways to move the ball (small ping pong ball) from one location to a goal. Students can program ways to move or clear obstacles (foam blocks) to make way for traffic.
