Former Navy Cmdr. David Fravor, who served as the commander of the F/A-18F squadron on the USS Nimitz, recounted an encounter with an unidentified object during a flight off the Southern California coast on November 14, 2004.
In a 2021 interview with “60 Minutes,” Fravor, a Top Gun naval flight school graduate, shared his experience. While training with the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group approximately 100 miles southwest of San Diego, Fravor and Lt. Cmdr. Alex Dietrich received reports from the USS Princeton, part of their training group, about “multiple anomalous aerial vehicles” descending 80,000 feet in less than a second over the horizon. Responding to the anomaly, Fravor and Dietrich diverted to investigate.
Fravor described spotting a small white Tic Tac-shaped object above the whitewater area. He and Dietrich, each accompanied by a weapons system officer in the back seat of their F/A-18F, observed the object for about five minutes.
Approaching for a closer look, Fravor noted that the Tic Tac object seemed to mimic his aircraft’s movements, demonstrating an awareness of their presence. The object, comparable in size to Fravor’s F/A-18F and lacking markings, wings, or exhaust plumes, accelerated rapidly when Fravor attempted to intercept it, seemingly disappearing. Remarkably, the object was detected approximately 60 miles away less than a minute later.

PRECISION MACHINED METAL SPINNING TOP: Each of our Stainless Steel models are made from precision grade Stainless Steel. Stainless contains many unique properties including: corrosion resistant, durable, temperature resistant, low maintenance, attractive appearance, and environmentally friendly. Each UFO is precision CNC machined to a tolerance of 0.005”. Also, each top features a ceramic spin ball that is 8x harder than steel and nearly perfectly smooth.
POST TREATMENT: After each piece is precision machined, the top undergoes an pressure vapor process to give it a hard black finish. After this is complete a precision laser etches very fine details onto the top and bottom of the UFO. This precision is the size of a human hair 0.001”. These fine entails label the UFO with the name and UFO sighting date and provide unique details that highlight the uniqueness of the UFO. These details also create a visual display when spun.
